Reporting Relationship
The Post-Secondary Navigator will report to the Director of Education.

Purpose
The Post-Secondary Navigator aims to assist post-secondary students in achieving their education and social aspirations so they are healthy, self-reliant, respectful culturally ground Indigenous individuals. The position will have case management skills to provide post-secondary activities such as intake and assessment to navigate the required educational studies and action plan for students.

Essential Functions

  • Provide letters of support and verification of sponsorship when required by the student
    Assist post-secondary students to navigate their school year (with due respect and confidentiality);
  • By analyzing and interpreting information regarding student attitudes, Academic achievements and interests
  • By encouraging independence and the development of a positive self-image
  • To review the academic progress of the students when necessary by counseling and assisting students in resolving problems that may jeopardize their sponsorship and therefore the achievement of their educational goals; and by arranging referrals two other agencies when necessary
  • Assisting in the provision of information to band members’ opportunities and developments in education;
  • By reviewing calendars and course description offered by agencies and institutions.
  • By utilizing the various forms of communications and media via the communications manager to inform band members of the opportunities and the availability of financial assistance
  • Work with high school guidance counselors to deliver information regarding sponsorship options and responsibilities
  • Implement and manage, plan and coordinate the MFN Post Secondary program according to the Post Secondary Education Guidelines as approved by the MFN and adhere to its Personnel Policies & Procedures
  • Work collaboratively with MFN departments and programs (i.e. OW, LDM) on the integration of programs and services including planning, communication, and relationship building
  • Deliver post-secondary education services eligible to MFN Band Membership according to existing Post Secondary Education Guidelines
  • Provide education assistance, programs and services to MFN post-secondary students
  • Ensure Anishnabek Culture (Seven Grandfather Teachings) is practiced within the delivery of programs and services
  • Ensure education guidelines are updated and communicated to all post secondary students and potential post secondary individuals
  • Operate computer software relevant to program
  • Ensures compliance of M’Chigeeng First Nation post-secondary guidelines, personnel policy, finance and administrative policies and procedures
  • Attend regular scheduled staff meetings and participate as a team member of the Education Unit
  • Ensure student records, files and internal documents are current, accurate, and maintained and kept confidential and filed accordingly
  • Maintenance of database and statistical data of student records, achievement or other purposes
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Navigate and develop a plan i.e. orientation sessions, workshops for students entering post-secondary programs
  • Receives and processes student applications and determines funding eligibility per program guidelines
  • Assist students with transition pieces such as admissions criteria by helping to complete application forms for admission, orientation process and scholarships; effectively interviewing and provide guidance in choosing the best academic path
  • Maintain knowledge of and refer students to appropriate resources at their respective schools to maximize use of student services that will benefit student retention, success, and the completion of post-secondary studies
  • Inform students of local and external labour market employment for future job demands of M’Chigeeng First Nation and other surrounding areas
  • Provide accurate, reliable information to enable students to select relevant programs and courses geared toward their career goals
  • Provide navigation services as required
  • Ability to work in a fast paced office environment and available to travel
  • Ability to demonstrate sound judgment in application of policies and proposing policy amendments to meet student needs
  • Develop and provide quarterly and annual reports, i.e. post-secondary budget, student progress, statistics, nominal roll, etc.
  • Assist to develop, plan, organize, monitor and manage the post-secondary budget and consult on funding issues concerning the financial support of students with the Director of Education
  • Ensure educational institution inquiries regarding student sponsorship confirmation are responded to in a timely matter and maintain excellent rapport
  • Assist in other duties as required
  • Participate and assist in the integration of planned cultural and social development activities relating to youth and students that will encourage, enhance and promote academic success, such as community development, youth strategy, social reform projects, annual student job fairs
  • Participate in professional development as required

Qualifications & Requirements:

Preferred:

University Degree – Bachelor of Education or Bachelor of Arts in Social Work or related field of study.  Three (3) years related experience, providing guidance and counseling support to post-secondary students.

Minimum:

College Diploma – Social Service Worker, or Native Counsellor Training Program (NCTP–3rs), Employment Counselling or related field of study.  Minimum of two (2) years’ work experience in guidance and counseling and/or related program delivery

Other:

Membership with the Ontario Native Education Counsellors Association (ONECA)
Strong knowledge and comprehension of the pedagogical and administrative direction of MFN education system
Demonstrated knowledge of Aboriginal specific education, employment and training needs and working with Aboriginal organizations and communities
Knowledge of government program interventions, education funding, employment and training programs
Demonstrate ability to assess and be sensitive to student/participant needs
Ability to incorporate Anishnabek culture into the delivery of post secondary education programming
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Strong time management and organizational skills
Understanding of First Nation needs and aspirations
An advocate of education for First Nation youth/learners coupled with sincere concern for their well-being
Fluency in Anishinabemowin is a strong asset; or must have a willingness to learn Anishinabemowin
Valid driver’s license
CRC/VSS requirement, thirty (30) days current (original or certified copy)
