Employment Counsellor
Department: Training & Employment Hub Centre
Classification: CS-3 ($53,591.00 – $65,499.00)
Status: Regular Full-Time

Reporting Relationship
Will work under the direction of the Ontario Works Department Manager.

Position Summary
Will work directly with clients to provide employment and training program supports and assistance based on individual needs with an end goal of finding meaningful employment.

Essential Functions

  • Provides counselling and assessment procedures to identify long and short term goals, and make appropriate referrals
  • Works with clients to develop job search skills and career action plans
  • Develops annual work plan to include professional development
  • Maintains strict confidentiality at all times; ensure compliance with MFN personnel policy
    Provides file and case management for tracking of client needs and progress
  • Assess client and community needs in collaboration with Training Hub Centre staff for the coordination and facilitation of workshops, information sessions and training workshops
  • Develops workshop curriculum, materials and resources with evaluations and follow-up
  • Assists with potential sponsors in the development of project proposals for submission
  • Understands M’Chigeeng FN and surrounding area labour market and labour force
  • Develops client skills inventory resource in collaboration with Hub Centre staff for employer referral staffing needs
  • Create networking opportunities with other First Nation communities, professionals, etc.,
  • Maintains statistical client data, workshops and training sessions delivered for program and funding report submissions
  • Maintains client file maintenance for follow-up on client progress while job searching, in training or new employment
  • Develops required reports for submission and makes presentations at monthly Training Hub staff meetings
  • Performs other duties that may be assigned from time to time to assist in the promotion of the organization’s mandate

Qualifications / Requirements
Preferred Post-Secondary Degree or Diploma in Social Work, Native Human Services or related field
Minimum of two (2) years’ work experience in counselling, workshop design, delivery and facilitation

  • Experience working directly with individuals in the employment and training counselling services
  • Experience with job search procedures and activities, training interventions, file maintenance and client follow up
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Aboriginal specific employment & training needs
  • Experience working with Aboriginal organizations and communities
  • Knowledge of government program interventions, and employment and training programs
  • Excellent research and analytical skills and advanced word processing and internet usage
  • High proficiency in Microsoft office and other software applications
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and time management and organizational skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to work well in team environments and work with clients on an individual basis
  • Required valid Driver’s License and access to a reliable insured vehicle
  • High level of confidentiality
  • Must have knowledge and/or experience with the culture, history and customs of the Anishnaabe
  • Understands and is fluent in Anishinabemowin or must be willing to learn is a strong assest
  • CRC required (thirty (30) days current, certified copy, or original)
