Reporting Relationship
The Resource Teacher will report to the Day Care Supervisor and Director of Education.

Position Summary
The main objectives of this position are to provide a wide range of individual support for Day Care children requiring special needs/more intensive assistance and to enhance professional development of Child Care Staff and Caregivers for the overall improvement of programs and services at the Day Care Centre.

Essential Functions

Special Needs Services

  • Review student files and relevant information to assist in the development of Individual Program Plan (IPP)
  • Provide direct support to children requiring more assistance for physical and mental wellness, social development and school readiness
  • Provide support on learning strategies, literacy and numeracy for all students within the classroom setting
  • Liaise regularly and effectively with classroom teachers, consulting psychologist or psycho-ed, principal and/or delegate, students and their parents
  • Implement behavior modification and other therapeutic programs under supervision of special education instructors, psychologists or speech-language pathologists professionals
  • Identify special learning styles and needs; and material, supplies and equipment needed to develop lessons and activities, such as audio and visual technique, field trips and other learning resources
  • Provide support to multiple child care staff/caregivers who work with children with special needs

Administration & Reporting

  • Ensure a clear understanding and strict adherence to Day Care policy & procedures; and MFN Personnel Policy
  • Complete progress reports on students and monthly reports with findings and recommendations
  • Ensure professionalism and confidentiality of children, parents and staff within the Day Care and community
  • Assist in budgeting proposal submissions pertaining to enhancing program development
  • Participate in staff meetings, training workshops, PD days and language classes

Qualifications and Requirements

Minimum
Diploma in Early Childhood Education from an Ontario College of Applied Arts and Technology or an equivalent academic qualification approved by an Education Director and three (3) years work related experience
Graduate of Post Secondary program of studies approved by an Education Director that is both theoretical and practical and that relates to the needs of children with special needs

Preferred
University Degree from a recognized educational institution in Child Sociology or relevant field of study and five (5) years work related experience
Experience working with children with special needs

Other
Knowledge of First Nation issues and challenges and is proactive in finding solutions
Have knowledge and understanding of the culture, traditions and history of the Anishinabek
Ability to work independently with strong time management and organizational skills to meet deadline

CRC/VSS Rationale:  M’Chigeeng First Nation and its agents are in a position of trust in services to band member children and/or vulnerable adults, so a safe and secure working environment is mandatory.  Applicants must provide a clear VSS Certificate and the VSS must have a record clear and/or dated of any convictions relating to alcohol, drugs, assault, violence and theft.  The VSS must be current (30 days) and must be an Original.
