Reporting Relationship
The Child &Youth Worker will report to the Health Services Department Manager.

Position Summary 
Using an Anishinaabe approach, the Child &Youth Worker will be responsible for the delivery and service of child and youth-oriented prevention and intervention programs.  For the purposes of improving holistic health, the Child and Youth Worker will work directly with children, youth and families through culturally appropriate community-based programs that support the physical, emotional, spiritual and mental well-being; and develop partnerships to determine the needs and development of programs and services.

Essential Functions

  • Promote and maintain a positive role model in cultural appropriate healthy lifestyle
  • Ensure safe and secure program activity environments for children, youth and families
  • Maintain strict oath of confidentiality and privacy
  • Participate in ongoing development and facilitation of services for the HSD
  • Attend monthly and other required team meetings to maintain teamwork and facilitate communication
  • For improved children and youth programs, using various methods, conduct surveys, document review of previous needs assessments, activity and focus group evaluations
  • Research, plan and implement prevention and intervention activities for children and youth such as recreational, homework and guidance support groups
  • Facilitate group workshops to teach life skills coaching, behavioural, social and coping skills
  • Schedule and prepare required facilities for program activities and supervise programs, facilities and equipment used for the provision of safety and security
  • Networks and forms partnerships to work collaboratively with existing organizations and MFN departments to determine needs and interests, age appropriate, for children, youth and their families such as sport, recreational, cultural and educational programs
  • Encourage Youth to participate in regional and territorial programs

Qualifications and Requirements

Preferred

  • University Degree in Social Work or related field of study and four (4) years related work experience

Minimum

  • Child & Youth Care Worker Diploma, Social Service Worker Diploma or other related field of study; or four (4) years combination of related training and/or education and work experience in the Children and Youth sector
  • Demonstrated commitment to support MFN children, youth and families
  • Strong written and oral communication and listening skills and facilitation experience
  • Must be able to relate well with children and youth
  • Ability to work in a stressful environment and work flexible hours

Other

  • Ability to apply stress management would be an asset
  • Understanding and fluency of Ojibwe language is an asset
  • Require valid Driver’s License and reliable vehicle with appropriate insurance coverage for transportation of clients and must be willing to obtain Drivers Abstract
  • Have Mental Health First Aid, Standard First Aid and CPR Certifications
  • Must have or be willing to obtain Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) Certifications

CRC/VSS Rationale:  M’Chigeeng First Nation and its agents are in a position of trust in services to band member children and/or vulnerable adults, so a safe and secure working environment is mandatory.  Applicants must provide a clear VSS Certificate and the VSS must have a record clear and/or dated of any convictions relating to alcohol, drugs, assault, violence and theft.  The VSS must be current (30 days) and must be an Original.
