Position Objective
Under the direct supervision of the School Principal, the Library Technician will perform all aspects of maintaining, developing, and organizing a user-oriented collection of Library and community resources and provide classroom support and instruction as needed.
Essential Functions
- Fosters a creative, flexible environment so that the school library is an essential part of the learning community
- Develops and maintains resources appropriate to the curriculum, the learners, and instructional strategies of the school community
- Cooperates and networks with other libraries/agencies
- Establishes procedure for selection, acquisition, circulation resource sharing of resources in all formats
- Evaluates, promotes, and uses existing and emerging technologies to support teaching and learning
- Promotes the ethical use of information, copyright, fair use and licensing of intellectual property
- Assist library users in accessing books, films, photographs, maps, documents, electronic materials, and other library materials
- Catalogues new library acquisitions
- Completes manual and on-line reference searches and make interlibrary loans for users
- Supports the delivery of curriculum and the development of information literacy by helping members and students locate and use relevant print and electronic resources
- Maintains inventory, forms and finding aids
- Maintains a clean and organized environment in the library which promotes a literacy-rich setting
- Purge, sort, reduce and sample archives
- Research and retrieve archival materials
- Facilitate book exchanges, literacy initiatives, and reading aloud to groups.
- Provide orientation and training to students and staff as well as providing library services and literacy activities within the school
- Make applications for funding on behalf of the library with the Ontario Libraries Capacity Fund and provide annual reports within reporting timeframe
- Development, production, and delivery of projects from proposal right up to delivery
- Maintain the library budget and selects new library materials based on the needs of the school community; communicate with the principal on priorities
- Produce overdue notices to account for all library materials
- Develop school library collections considering needs of the school and community
- Catalogues and circulates library materials using the automated library system
- Supports teaching staff with their use of Library
- Keeps library evening hours open for community members and students – 4 hours per week (minimum)
- Implements a work plan for library/literacy activities during the school year
- Supports the delivery of curriculum and the development of information literacy by helping staff and students locate and use relevant print and electronic resources
- Provide reference service to students and staff, including preparation of materials for classes
- Perform tasks related to library record keeping and clerical functions
- Work as an active member of the school and works collaboratively with all staff
- Assists staff during school related activities
- Attend meetings as required
- Provides information for MFN annual reports as requested; keeps library statistics
- Establish community partnerships to enhance programming and use of Library
- Attend professional development sessions/training as required
- And other duties as assigned (i.e., After school programming)
Qualifications and Requirements
Preferred
- Post Secondary Education and a Library and Information Technician Diploma in addition to possessing one (1) to two (2) years of experience working with children in a school or public library.
- College Diploma in the field of education or equivalent or social services or a minimum of two (2) years’ work/volunteer related experience with the completion of secondary school or equivalent
Minimum
- College Diploma in related field of study five (5) years’ work experience in related field
- Proficiency in computer applications; Microsoft Office, library software
- Good interpersonal, organizational, and multitasking skills; along with dependability
- Possesses excellent verbal and written communication skills and sound judgment.
- Excellent rapport with young people
- Knowledge and/or experience with the culture, history, and customs of the Anishnaabek
- Fluency and/or understanding of Anishinaabemowin is an asset and/or is willing to learn
- First Aid Certificate and CPR will be an asset
- Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSS) requirement must be current 30-days and must be an original.
