M’Chigeeng First Nation has held community information sessions over the past few months to seek input from M’Chigeeng band members to help inform Chief and Council’s decision-making on the Robinson-Huron Treaty (RHT) Annuities, with the last meeting being held on May 15, 2024, which included sessions in M’Chigeeng – that included Zoom links for band members joining online – as well as Sudbury, Sault Ste. Marie and Toronto to better reach out to the off-reserve population.
It is important to note that M’Chigeeng band members will not be receiving 100% payout of the RHT settlement, as M’Chigeeng Chief and Council have a fiduciary and legal responsibility to ensure a portion of these funds are put into trust for future generations of M’Chigeeng. There will be more consultations with M’Chigeeng band members over the coming months to understand what band members would like to prioritize for these funds.

Breakdown of M’Chigeeng’s RHT portion:

1. 55% – Individual payments to MFN membership

2. 39% – In-trust for future MFN generations

3. 5% – Collective, retained by RHTLF for negotiating the share of future annuities

4. 1% – Living Individual Annuitant, retained by RHTLF for non-member settlor FN
