Position Summary
The Assistant Cook Reports to the Head Cook and or Principal and is responsible in preparing nutritious meals/snacks for children; while following and adhering to the Canada Food Guidelines and public health regulations, including food storage and preparation.
Essential Functions
- Assists the Cook in preparing and serving meals and snacks daily and prepares next day desserts
- Assists with setup, cleaning and disinfecting tables/eating areas.
- Assists with cleaning and disinfecting cooking area, washing and sanitizing dishes after each meal and snack
- Assists in with regular cleaning and disinfecting of all kitchen appliances, cupboards/drawers, storage areas, pantry, etc.
- Assists with food inventory and preparing weekly grocery list as necessary
- Resumes the roles and responsibilities in the absence of the Cook by planning and preparing meals/snacks
- Comply with MFN Personnel Policies & Procedures and all relevant Legislation and Food Safety Standards & Guidelines, including Health & Safety procedures within the work area
- Maintains strict confidentiality
- Assist to prepare and maintain food/freezer/pantry inventory, along with equipment
- Pays close attention to best-before-date labels ensuring perishable and fresh foods are safe for consumption
- Pays close attention to the children list with food allergies or special dietary needs
- Participates in monthly fire drills and other emergency procedures
- Attends staff meetings, professional development days and other relevant training opportunities to be current on Health & Safety Regulations for proper food handling
- Practices safe food handling techniques, preparation & storage for maximum nutritional value
- Assist to prepare weekly menus and grocery list as necessary
- Follows the Cook’s direction per Dietician recommended menus
- Assist to prepare special meals and snacks and for special occasions and events
- Perform other duties as required
Qualifications and Requirements
- High School Diploma or Equivalency and 1-year direct work-related experience.
- Food Handlers & WHMIS Certifications or willingness to acquire
- Knowledge and experience of Work Place Health & Safety procedures and Food Safety Standards & Guidelines
- Ability to read and understand labels and instructions for cleaning chemicals and products Ability to work with minimal supervision and in a team environment,
- Able to maintain confidentiality always
- Knowledge of Anishnabek culture, traditions and practices or willingness to learn
- Flexible to work odd hours, overtime and/or weekends as needed
- Valid Driver’s License is an asset, not mandatory
- Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSS) requirement must be 30-days current and must be an original
VSS Rationale
CRC must be thirty (30) days current and be an original or certified copy upon being successfully offered the position.
