Position Summary
The Maintenance Worker will be responsible for supporting the upkeep, repair, and general maintenance of buildings owned and operated by M’Chigeeng First Nation. This position will play a key role in implementing and managing a work order system to track and respond to maintenance requests. The worker will be responsible for completing minor maintenance tasks, ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the facilities, and assisting with other maintenance projects as needed.

Reporting Relationship
Works under the direction and supervision of the Buildings and Grounds Supervisor.

Essential Functions

Work Order Management:

  • Assist in the setup and management of a computerized work order system for tracking maintenance requests and scheduling.
  • Respond to and prioritize incoming work orders for minor repairs, maintenance tasks, and inspections.
  • Ensure all work orders are completed within specified timeframes, and that all maintenance work is documented properly.
  • Occasionally responsible for direct supervision for more than one employee

General Maintenance:

  • Perform routine inspections of building systems (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, etc.) and report any issues or deficiencies.
  • Identify and obtain authorization for any major repairs to equipment and building.
  • Responsible for contacting contractors and monitor work required to be completed.
  • Ensure effective operation of the building’s plumbing, electrical, heating, ventilation systems and emergency back-up systems by, performing routine inspections of building systems  and report any issues or deficiencies.
  • Complete minor repairs and preventative maintenance tasks, including but not limited to:
    • Painting and touch-ups of walls and ceilings.
    • Repairing door hardware, locks, windows, and general fixtures.
    • Replacing light bulbs and other minor electrical work.
    • Addressing plumbing issues like leaky faucets or clogged drains.
    • Minor carpentry and general repairs to furniture or fixtures.
    • Check and maintain cleaning equipment.
    • Ensure safe walkways of building

Safety and Compliance:

  • Follow all health, safety, and environmental regulations in the completion of maintenance tasks.
  • Ensure that all work areas are clean, safe, and organized during and after the completion of tasks.
  • Help ensure that all buildings meet safety and accessibility standards as per regulations.

Collaboration:

  • Communicate with the Community Complex Supervisor to report on the progress of work orders and issues needing attention.
  • Collaborate with other team members to assist with larger maintenance projects or repairs.
  • Participate in regular team meetings to discuss ongoing projects, feedback, and safety protocols.

Record Keeping:

  • Maintain accurate records of all maintenance activities, including completed work orders, inventory, and any issues or repairs.
  • Help monitor the inventory of maintenance supplies and tools, requesting replenishments as needed.
  • Maintain on-going inventory by checking stock to determine inventory needs, anticipating cleaning, equipment replacements, parts and supplies; and, placing orders through financial procedures of the M’Chigeeng First Nation.

Other Duties:

  • Perform other related tasks as assigned by the Community Complex Supervisor or CPPW Manager.

Qualifications:

Skills:

  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to use basic tools and equipment to perform minor repairs.
  • Proficiency in basic computer skills, particularly for work order systems or maintenance software.
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time efficiently.

Physical Requirements: Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting, bending, climbing, and working in various conditions (e.g., heights, confined spaces).

Working Conditions:

  • Typical work hours: Monday to Friday, with some flexibility depending on work order urgency.
  • Occasional weekend or after-hours work may be required for emergency maintenance or urgent repairs.

  • Ability to work outside in various types of weather conditions
  • Ability to exercise care, follow safety procedures and wear appropriate safety equipment for public and own safety
  • Work is primarily on-site at various buildings owned by M’Chigeeng First Nation.

Preferred:
Minimum of 1-2 years in a maintenance or repair role, with knowledge of basic building systems and minor repairs (plumbing, electrical, HVAC, etc.).
Valid First Aid / CPR Certificate
Proficient and fluent Ojibwe language

Minimum:
Grade 12 Diploma
A valid driver’s license
Valid First Aid / CPR Certificate
Knowledge of Anishinabek language and culture
Must be available to work early mornings, evenings and/or weekends on call basis.
Valid WHIMIS certification

CRC Rationale
