POSITION SUMMARY

M’Chigeeng First Nation is seeking a motivated and reliable Water/Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator to support the safe, effective and reliable operation of the First Nation’s centralized and decentralized water systems and wastewater system.

The position is responsible for monitoring and operating treatment systems and related equipment, collecting and testing water and wastewater samples, maintaining accurate operational records, performing routine maintenance, responding to operational issues and emergencies, and supporting the ongoing maintenance and improvement of water and wastewater facilities.

The position may be filled at the Operator in Training (OIT), Level I or Level II classification depending on the successful candidate’s education, experience, certification and demonstrated competency.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Operate and monitor computerized and manual water and wastewater treatment systems and related equipment.
  • Monitor plant equipment, gauges, meters and control systems to ensure systems are operating properly.
  • Collect and test water and wastewater samples and accurately record results.
  • Monitor water quality indicators, including chlorine and bacterial levels, and make appropriate process adjustments within assigned authority.
  • Identify equipment malfunctions and operational issues and take appropriate corrective action or notify the ORO.
  • Complete and maintain daily plant logs, reports, statistics and other required records.
  • Perform routine and minor maintenance and assist with repairs to plant machinery and related infrastructure.
  • Assist with maintenance of watermains, hydrants, valves, pumping stations, wastewater systems and related infrastructure.
  • Participate in facility maintenance, upgrades, construction and operational projects.
  • Respond to water quality concerns, operational issues and emergency situations.
  • Participate in standby, on-call, weekend, statutory holiday and overtime requirements as scheduled.
  • Follow all applicable M’Chigeeng First Nation policies, procedures, safety requirements and water/wastewater regulations.
  • Maintain effective communication with coworkers, supervisors, contractors, suppliers and other applicable parties.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
LEVEL-SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

Operator in Training (OIT)

The OIT will work under the direction of the ORO/OIC while developing the knowledge, skills and experience required for operator certification. Duties will include assisting with plant operations, inspections, sampling, testing, maintenance, documentation and construction/project activities.

Level I Operator

The Level I Operator will independently perform routine operational, monitoring, sampling, testing and maintenance activities within their certification and assigned authority. The operator will identify operational issues, make routine process adjustments and maintain required operational records.

Level II Operator

The Level II Operator will perform advanced operational functions with increased independence, technical judgment and accountability. Responsibilities may include evaluating treatment effectiveness, troubleshooting complex operational issues, making or recommending process-control changes, contributing to maintenance and quality management systems, supporting facility upgrades and providing operational guidance to less-experienced operators.

QUALIFICATIONS

Operator in Training (OIT)

  • Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • Valid Ontario driver’s licence with insurance.
  • Willingness and ability to complete required operator training and certification.
  • Ability to perform routine inspections, sampling, monitoring and maintenance activities.
  • Good analytical, problem-solving, planning and organizational skills.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to perform manual labour.
  • General computer knowledge is an asset.

Level I

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma.
  • Level I Water Treatment and Water Distribution certification, in good standing.
  • Level I Wastewater Treatment and Level I Wastewater Collections certifications.
  • One (1) year of related work experience.
  • Class G driver’s licence and willingness to obtain a Class DZ licence.
  • Confined Space Entry, CPR/First Aid, Working at Heights/Fall Arrest and WHMIS certifications.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of water/wastewater treatment operations.
  • Strong problem-solving, decision-making and organizational skills.

Level II

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma.
  • Level II Water Treatment and Water Distribution certification, in good standing.
  • Applicable wastewater certifications identified for the position.
  • Two (2) years of related work experience.
  • Class G driver’s licence and willingness to obtain a Class DZ licence.
  • Confined Space Entry, CPR/First Aid, Working at Heights/Fall Arrest and WHMIS certifications.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate operational conditions, troubleshoot issues and make appropriate process-control decisions.
  • Strong technical, analytical, decision-making and problem-solving skills.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

All levels require:

  • Willingness to participate in ongoing training and continuing education.
  • Ability to work non-standard hours and participate in on-call/standby rotations.
  • Ability to work safely in plant, outdoor, infrastructure and construction environments.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Numeracy and computer skills.
  • Knowledge of Anishnabek culture, traditions and practices.
  • Understanding or fluency in Anishinabemowin, or willingness to learn, is a strong asset.
  • A current Criminal Reference Check in accordance with M’Chigeeng First Nation requirements upon hire.
